Whether you observe Juneteenth or July 4th (or both!), you’ll probably be celebrating with food, fireworks and laughter. After all, it’s summer in Montana and there is much fun to be had! But hunger & basic needs insecurity don’t adhere to the academic calendar, and there are still many UM students, staff, and faculty on campus who are struggling to make ends meet. With fewer donations coming in during summer months, the UM Pantry continues to receive visits from 20+ households each day.

In honor of Juneteenth & the Fourth of July, we’re asking folks to reflect on the role that food plays in our conceptions of freedom, independence and opportunity. Food and basic needs insecurity are linked to poor health outcomes, which may in turn exacerbate existing insecurities. This cycle makes it all the more challenging for food insecure households to achieve stability and improved health outcomes. Moreover, food insecurity disproportionately affects BIPOC people and communities across the country. For instance, did you know that Black Americans experience nearly double the rate of food insecurity as White Americans?

This summer, as you gear up to celebrate our Nation’s independence with fireworks and BBQs, consider supporting the UM Food Pantry in promoting food justice & access for all!

  • $25 feeds a student for one week
  • $50 buys a celebratory meal for 6 people (hot dogs, BBQ chips, corn, coleslaw, mini apple pie)
  • $100 sponsors our Grab-n-Go shelf for 10 days
  • Interested in supporting a larger project? Reach out to umpantry@mso.umt.edu to learn more about our current needs & ambitions.

We’re encouraging any folks who are able to make a recurring gift to help support Pantry operations throughout the dry seasons! Giving just a small amount each month helps us feed students throughout the year!

The UM Food Pantry will be purchasing a limited supply of festive foods to support households in celebrating the upcoming holidays, including hotdogs, chips, fresh watermelon & corn on the cob, coleslaw kits and mini apple pies. Folks are invited to swing by the Pantry on Mondays, Wednesdays & Saturdays from 11am-3pm to grab what they need!
